Eurostat microdata

What is Eurostat?

Eurostat is the statistical office of the European Union, which offers a range of important and interesting quality data that governments, businesses, academics, journalists and the public can use for their work and daily life. Further to this, the European Commission provides access to confidential data (microdata) for scientific purposes only to institutions recognized as a research entity that follow the legal framework and regulations established by European Parliament and of the Council on European Statistics.  This Regulation specifies the conditions for access to confidential statistical data for scientific purposes, the obligations of the researchers and the research institution, measures for preserving the confidentiality of statistical data and sanctions in the event of any breach of these obligations.

Microdata consist of sets of records containing information on individual persons, households or business entities. High quality microdata is increasingly being made available to researchers as the analysis of high-quality evidence play a key-role in the well-being of modern societies.

ECLAC Headquartered in Santiago was recognized as a research entity by letter¹, electronically signed on 3 September 2018 in accordance with article 4.2 (Validity of electronic documents) of Commission Decision 2004/563.  This condition allows ECLAC to request access to Eurostat microdata through the submission of research proposals originating at the research entity in Santiago, Chile.
